1st Conditional: Practice the Simple Present after ‘If’
The simple present you learned in 1B. But it’s very hard. Remember to put an ‘s’ whenever the subject is singular.
Positive
I work
You work he works
We work she works
They work it works
Some verbs are irregular. Even if you have ‘he, she, or it,’ you can’t just add an ‘s’. That’s because the last letters sound just like an ‘s,’ they are just air sound. For example, if you write ‘he washs,’ to go directly from the ‘sh’ sound to the ‘s’ is very hard. You’d have to blow a lot of air. Therefore, we add ‘es’ so it’s easier to pronounce: He washes. There are 4 times you add ‘es’ when it’s he, she, or it: any verb that ends with ‘s,’ ‘sh,’ ‘ch,’ or ‘x.’
Irregular 1
--s --sh --ch --x
He misses his mom. She washes the dishes. He watches TV. He fixes the car.
She kisses the baby. He brushes his teeth. She catches the ball. She mixes the drink.
We have another irregular form that’s also only for ‘he, she, or it.’ It’s not a pronunciation problem this time. It’s a spelling problem. I don’t know why we do it, but we do. Any verb where the last two letters are a consonant and then a y, you change the ‘y’ to ‘i.’
Memorize this rhyme to help you remember the rule.
Consonant y, Change y to i, Like the Verb Cry, I don’t know why.
Irregular 2 Normal: (the last letter is ‘y,’ but before it is a vowel)
cry fly study play say employ
He cries He flies He studies He plays He says He employs
She cries She flies She studies She plays She says She employs
It cries It flies It studies It plays It says It employs
Complete the 1st Conditional sentences by using the simple present form of the verb after ‘if.’
1. I will be happy if she _______calls___________________ me. (call)
2. She will be late if she ______________________________ so slowly. (drive)
3. You will eat more if you _________________________________ . (exerciTse)

9. I won’t forgive her if she _________________________________ to me. (lie)
10. She won’t help clean up if we ______________________________ her. (ask)
The Simple Present negative is also important to review. The same pronouns go together as in the positive: I, you, we, and they together, he, she, and it, the singulars, together.
Negative
I don’t drive
You don’t drive He doesn’t drive
We don’t drive She doesn’t drive
They don’t drive It doesn’t drive
Notice the verb has two parts: the negative auxiliary, don’t or doesn’t, and the main verb. The main verb is in the base form; there are no changes to it. The ‘s’ you added before, goes into the word ‘doesn’t’. You don’t add an ‘s’ to the main verb. Some students hear bad English on the street and imitate it. If you’ve heard, “She don’t work,” that’s bad English. The correct form is “She doesn’t work.”
