Present Perfect Review with Regular Verbs
Regular past participles are the same as regular verbs in the past tense.
Past: I walked 3 miles yesterday. Present Perfect: I have walked for 1 hour.
She cried last night. She has cried all night.
The shopped at the market. They have shopped at the market.
Now most regular past participles end with ‘-ed.’ But if you look closely at the examples above, that isn’t always the case. We have 2 irregular spelling rules for ‘-ed.’
Consonant Y, Change Y to I 2. Consonant Vowel Consonant, Double the Last Letter
cry---cried shop—shopped
apply—applied mop—mopped
*Note: Do not always change y to I, Look at the last 3 letters of the verb,
but only if the letter before it is if they’re c-v-c, then double the last letter
a consonant, change it to ‘i’.
**play--played
The Present Perfect Verb has 2 parts: the auxiliary (have/has) and the past participle.
The word ‘have’ here doesn’t mean to possess. It has nothing to do with possessing.
Remember that ‘has’ is for singular only; that’s why it has an ‘s’.
Complete with both parts of the present perfect verb. Write the past participle correctly following the rules above.
