Class Assignments: We looked at the 2nd reason to use the present perfect continuous: when an action stopped right before now. Often it means we see or observe something of the previous action.
Why are your hands so dirty? ---I've been working in the garden. (not anymore, just finished) Why are you crying? ---I've been watching a sad movie. Sometimes, however, we can't use a continuous verb because the action is a one time thing, something that completes. Why are you upset? --I've lost my purse. (Not: I've been losing my purse; it's normally something that happened once, not again and again)

Class Assignments: Wow! That was a difficult review of comma rule 2. If you missed class, don't feel you must do #3 above. I think it would be too hard to do alone.
We did some dialogue practice and a game to help make sentences in the present perfect continuous. If you've missed the classes, be sure to do #1 and #2 above. Class Assignments: We finished the 3 pig comma rule exercise and started to look at the present perfect continuous.
Class Assignments:
Today we took some time to finish the reading comprehension for Sniff. We also started a cumulative comma exercise that we didn't have time to finish, but we'll finish tomorrow.
It was also CASAS make up day. Students who've taken 2 CASAS test will receiver a voucher which cuts the cost of one class to $15. We took our fifth test on superlative adverbs, Sniff, and all the comma rules, 1-5. We have one more point of grammar to study before we wrap things up: present perfect continuous. Class Assignments: We started class with a comma exercise with the Goldilocks and the Three Bears story (#1 above).
Students also worked together to decide which comma rule, 1-4, was used for each comma. Later, I did a dictation asking students to change an adjective to the superlative adverb. Then, students got up and asked the questions to other students and wrote their answers. If you missed class, you can write your own answers (with complete sentences, please). Class Assignments: Yesterday I missed class due to a doctor's appointment. If you missed class too, please be sure to do #1 and #2 above!
We reviewed comma rule 4 (see #1 above). Remember if you see 'and,' check if there is a subject (actor) after. If there is, use a comma. If not, don't. Class Assignments:
We reviewed superlative adverbs trying to find the best or most regarding groups.
Then we worked a lot on the pronunciation of the story Sniff. Finally, we did a dictation practicing the 4 comma rules. Please remember there is no school on Monday!! See you Tuesday. We did an exercise to practice the vocabulary from the story Sniff. Then, students wrote 5 sentences using words they didn't know. We did a Valentine's Day game: How Romantic Are You? We did a dictation reviewing Comma Rule 4. Students are doing a great job learning this rule. Class Assignments:
We started class by doing the our first written exercise with superlative adverbs (#1 above in Class Assingnments). Then, we did some speaking practice of superlative adverbs with cards:
A: Tell me the truth. How do I dance? B: Honestly, you dance the most beautifully of everyone I know. Later, we reviewed what makes a sentence and how to identify the subject and verb. Then, I introduced Comma Rule 4 which we use to connect two sentences together with and, but, or, so. I think this is the most difficult comma rule, but maybe you'll find it easier. We did our first practice of the rule (#2 above under Class Assignments). Class Assignments: Class Summary
We did the review of spelling for adverbs (#1 above). And, I introduced the irregular superlative adverbs: early--the earliest, late---the latest, hard--the hardest, fast--the fastest, good--the best, bad---the worst, far---the farthest. These exceptions don't use 'most'. The last 3 letters --est, mean 'most.' Please use the Quizlet flashcards on your smartphone or computer to practice the new words (#2 above). On your phone, be sure to download the free Quizlet app so the programs will be better designed for your small screen. We took the CASAS test in the second hour of class |
