Class Assignments: We worked on the story, focusing on pronunciation. Then students worked on the vocabulary practice (#1 above). We did a speaking exercise where students had conversations about body art.
We did an exercise where students had to correct sentences in the 1st conditional. Our next test will be on Friday. It will cover the 1st conditional (simple present positive, irregular spelling 'cries,' 'washes,' 'watches,' 'misses,' 'fixes,' the negative 'he/she/it doesn't + base verb, they/we/you/I 'don't; and will + base verb, won't + base verb. Also, you'll need to know the basic information from the story Body Art and the new words in the story.

Class Assignments: Sorry for this being late. I'll do my best to remember what we did yesterday.
Students wrote one sentence about their weekend on the board. Later in groups, students asked them as many questions about it. For example, if a student wrote, "I went to a party." The students would ask: Where was the party? Who did you go with? When did you go to the party? How long did you stay at the party? How did you get to the party? Did you have fun? What did you do? Did you eat? What did you drink? We did another 1st conditional exercise where students had to put in both verbs correctly. The first ones start with 'If,' the others use 'if' in the middle. Remember that there are 2 tenses we use in the 1st conditional: simple present and the future. You'll know which one to use if you look for the word 'if'. Wherever 'if' is, you put the simple present right after it. Therefore, if you see 'If' at the beginning, the simple present verb will come first. If you see 'if' in the middle, the simple present verb will be in the 2nd part of the sentence. Example1: If she ___________________, she ____________ more money. (go--make) Here I see 'If' at the beginning, so I'l start with the simple present, then the future. If she goes to work, she will make more money. Example 2: He _________________ in trouble if he ______________to work late. (get--come) Here 'if' is in the middle, so we'll put the simple present verb 2nd. He will get in trouble if he comes to work late. Today, we went over the pronunciation of the vocabulary from Body Art. It's obvious most students are not practicing on Quizlet to help themselves learn the pronunciation or meanings. In fact, I have more students from my ESL 5 class who are studying the words than in our class! Next, students got in groups and practiced the guessing game to help learn the words better. After that, students wrote stories with a partner using the 1st conditional. Everyone started with the same beginning--If I watch too much TV,....--but then continued the story always starting with 'if'. We had some very funny stories. Finally, we did a speaking exercise where we debated what's better a pen or a pencil, a cat or a dog, a car or a bicycle. Great job! Class Assignments: We took the first part of class to go over the Body Art Glossary. I helped students with the pronunciation and meaning.
Next, students read the story, now with a better understanding of some of the hard words. We talked about the basic ideas of the story. I asked students questions to see if they understood the information and could remember the basic ideas. Finally, we practiced the 1st conditional where students had to fix both verbs of the sentence. If you missed class, which is a lot of you, please also make sure to do #4 above. Class Assignments: We took a large part of the class today doing a speaking exercise to help us practice the simple present. It's nto easy. You have to remember to put the 's' at the end of the verb for he, she, or it. But only when it's positive, not when it's negative or a question:
Positive: She works at night. (add 's') Negative: She doesn't work at night. (no 's'--the 's' is in doesn't) Question: Does she work at night? (no 's'--the 's' is in 'does') Students did a great job speaking for about 45 minutes and I was happy to see them correcting and helping each other. The last part of class we did the exercise #1 above to practice the simple present within the 1st conditional. Class Assignments: We practiced the 1st conditional a little more practicing with those irregular spelling verbs in the simple present.
I showed students how we can use the 1st conditional starting with the future and using if and the simple present in the end: I will take the bus if my car breaks down. She will miss class if she has an appointment. He will buy a new car if he makes more money. Students practiced making sentences in groups. Later, we looked at pictures showing body art and tattoos from around the world. Then, we started our new story, Body Art. Class Assignments:

I introduced the 1st Conditional. This grammar has 2 predicates in different tenses. The first is the simple present. We use it after the word 'if'. The other is the future. To make the future, just use 'will' or 'won't' and a base verb. If she gets sick, she won't go to scho Great work, everyone!

This afternoon, I'll create 2 more Quizlet exercises to practice all the 75 verbs. Students did the reading comprehension exercise for the story about spanking. Please do it at home if you missed class to be prepared for the test. Class Assignments: We did a lot today! We practiced using the present perfect with present time frames such as today, this week, this year. Then we practiced the same grammar in groups asking 'Who has drunk the most coffee today? Who has taken the most buses today? Who has exercised the most this week?'
We reviewed the irregular past verbs and I have some very bad news. Students are performing below passing. Students clearly still have not been studying at home and it shows. If you look under Class Assignments, you'll see 3 exercises for you to practice your pronunciation more: #3, #4, and #5. Every student should put in an hour of studying as the minimum for today, tomorrow, and Thursday so that you can pass the test on Friday. We finally saw the last main reason to use the present perfect: when an action finished right before now--use 'just', or when an important action happened or change close to now---use recently. Are you hungry? No, I've just eaten, thanks. Don't you work Monday through Friday? No, they've recently changed my schedule. |
